The 100 Story Building

Alice is an Ambassador and Board Member for the 100 Story Building.

 

100 Story Building is a centre for young writers based in Melbourne’s inner-west. Here, children and young people from culturally and linguistically diverse and marginalised backgrounds are given the opportunity to foster their creative voice and to have their ideas shared and respected. We bring together young writers and members of Melbourne’s creative community, and encourage them to share in their skills and understandings through creative writing excursions, publishing programs and after-school activities.

 

Our mission is to provide opportunities for the most marginalised children and young people in our community to build the literacy skills, confidence and sense of belonging that are fundamental to future success.

 

It is run by Lachlann, Jess and Lisa, who are there every day to welcome students and visitors. Please drop by and say hello, volunteer, or sign up a child you know who would love to do a writing workshop!

Back to School

Growing up in Braybrook in the 1980s, Les Twentyman was known in the Western suburbs as a legendary social worker. His street outreach work changed the lives of many of the most disadvantaged young people in Australia. His Back to School program aims to help kids begin a new school year or term with books and resources. The program has directly assisted over 14,000 school students and over 300 University students.

 

If you are a STUDENT with recent textbooks you no longer need, maybe you might want to consider donating them to another student through this program.

Room to Read

Room to Read is an innovative global non-profit founded on the belief that World Change starts with Educated Children®, envisioning a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world.

 

Focusing on literacy and gender equality in education, Room to Read works in collaboration with local communities, partner organisations and governments, developing literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children. The organisation also supports girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

 

Room to Read focuses its efforts on developing reading skills in primary school-aged children because literacy is the foundation for all future learning. Since it was founded in 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of nearly 9 million children by establishing school libraries, publishing original children’s books in more than 25 local languages, constructing child-friendly classrooms and supporting educators with training and resources to teach reading, writing and active listening.

 

Room to Read is changing children’s lives in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia. Our goal is to reach 10 million children by December 2015. To achieve this, we are launching the Destination LITERACY campaign, a $20 million, 20-month initiative which is supported by Room to Read's team of passionate and committed team of writer ambassadors.

Asia and World Literarcy in Schools

 

By participating in Room to Read’s mission to promote literacy and gender equality in developing countries, students find the motivation to learn about the geography, language and culture of the Asian and African countries we work in - and the daily lives of the children they are helping.

 

In taking the initiative and starting awareness-raising or fundraising projects at school or in their community group, students will cultivate valuable leadership skills, creativity, and an entrepreneurial spirit as well as feel empowered that they can be agents of change in the world.

Alice’s books are studied in secondary schools and universities in Australia as well as around the world. She has lectured at universities and schools all around Australia and overseas, and taught writing workshops to students from the ages of 8 to 80.
